便利堂が主催するHariban Award 2023の最優秀賞受賞者クリスティン・ポッターの個展『Dark Waters』を開催します。ポッターは、2016年から2019年にかけて、アメリカ南東部アパラチア地方に伝わる民謡の中でも“殺人バラード”と呼ばれるカテゴリーに着目し、取材しました。歌には恋仲の男女が登場し、男性の暴力によって女性の命が絶たれるという悲劇が描かれます。実際に暴力的な名のつけられた水域を訪れたポッターは旅先で出会った情景や景色と共に、歌われた女性をイメージしてスタジオ撮影されたポートレートと歌詞を織り混ぜて一連のシリーズを完成させました。
民謡にのせられた悲しみの物語は一体誰がために称賛され謳われたのか――。
本展では、Hariban Award 2023の受賞作として制作された８点のコロタイププリントと映像作品を紹介します。ポッターがとりわけ注意を払う漆黒の背景や陰影、そして風景の奥行きの描写など、コロタイプによって厚みある表現となって立ち現れた世界観を、ぜひご高覧ください。

Benrido is pleased to present “Dark Waters”, a solo exhibition by Kristine Potter, the Grand Prize Winner of the 2023 Hariban Award. Between 2016 and 2019, Potter focused her research on a genre of folk songs from the Appalachian region of the southeastern US known as “murder ballads”. The songs feature a man and a woman in love, and depict the tragedy of the woman’s life being ended by the man’s violence. Potter visited the actual bodies of water with the violent names, and created a series interweaving the lyrics with studio portraits taken in the image of the sung women, along with scenes and landscapes she encountered on her travels.
The exhibition presents eight collotype prints and video works produced as part of the award-winning Hariban Award 2023. We invite you to discover the world created by Potter’s richly expressive collotype prints, including the deep black backgrounds and shadows and the depiction of the depth of the landscape, to which she pays particular attention.
Kristine Potter is an artist based in Nashville, Tennessee, USA whose work often explores masculine archetypes, the American landscape, and cultural tendencies toward mythologizing the past. Her first monograph Manifest was published by TBW Books in 2018. Potter was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2018 and the Grand Prix Image Vevey for 2019-2020. Potter’s work is in numerous public and private collections including The High Museum of Art, The Georgia Museum of Art, 601 Artspace, The Do Good Foundation, the Swiss Camera Museum, and Foundation Vevey. Potter is an Assistant Professor of Photography at Middle Tennessee State University and is represented by Sasha Wolf Projects.
