彼の翁(おう)にはまたなにをか付け加えんや
ものいえば唇寒しの思いぞする
嵯峨野を根城に蟠踞(ばんきょ)の幾星霜
作りてし已(や)まむと
重き鎮めの如くおはす九十翁
もの生すことの消耗と達成に一喜一憂
昂然悄然(こうぜんしょうぜん)
今もてエロース神に随伴帰依
老いの向うの冒険行に遊ばんとす
かつて我はあと十年と宣(のたま)ひしが
その今老いの肉体や如何(いかん)
身体髪膚(はっぷ)しどけなしや
ままならずや
しかれども孤高の心魂別格にて
わが身旧(ふ)るにつれ
来し方織り入れ
まだまだと向上変転の途(と)仰ぎ見る
ままならぬ五体引っ提(さ)げつ
なお精神は理性知性正気毒気の充満せる
一個の大丈夫の風情
この世は死せる人間そっちのけ
生きている者どもの世なれど
だれか知る、先生の営為の生み付けしものは
生死(しょうじ)の断面に亀裂を生ぜしめるや否や…

Homage to a Nonagenerian (translated by Jack Stoneman)
What more can I say about that venerable old man’s life as an artist?
I fear that by saying anything…well, silence is golden, as they say.
How many years now?…
Nights of stars and of frost accumulated as he put down deep roots,
firmly ensconced in Kyoto’s Sagano – never quitting creating,
like a commanding numinous presence, abides the venerable nonagenarian.
Joys, and by turn, sorrows borne of the accomplishments and burnouts of being an artist, of giving life to things.
Triumphs, and failures.
Even now he remains a devoted follower of the god Eros,
looking forward to enjoying the path of adventure beyond old age.
Once he declared, “I have ten years left”,
but now, ten years later, I worry how his aged body is faring…is his whole body falling apart?…perhaps limited in what it can do?
However, his proudly independent soul is so extraordinary,
and as his body grows old, he weaves his past into his unfinished present,
always gazing upward along the path of progress and transformation.
Lugging along his sometimes uncooperative body,
his mind and spirit are still brimming with reason and intelligence, sanity and befuddlement.
He possesses the air of a singular great man.
Ours is a world of beings who live without regard for those who have died, and yet who knows?…
perhaps the works borne of his endeavors will create a fissure at the cross-section of life and death…

This year is the final show of Yanagihara Mutsuo. Today is the Fifteenth of the Eleventh Month. The deadline nears, but the other day Master Yanagihara told me, “I still have plenty of time.” He never gives up. This writer cannot help but regard with awe and respect this aspect of Sensei’s character.
