概要

このたびFINCH ARTSでは、2025年8月3日(日)から9月1日(月)まで、上前智祐の個展を開催いたします。

上前智祐(うえまえ ちゆう｜1920-2018)は、油絵具の点描を幾度も重ねた絵画や、布を針と糸の緻密なステッチで覆い尽くしたシリーズ「縫（ぬい）」を手がけ、独自の表現を追求した作家です。上前は戦後関西を拠点に活動した「具体美術協会」の結成から解散まで、一貫してその活動に参加し続けた数少ないメンバーの一人でした。しかし、ダイナミックな身体性や空間性を伴う作品が数多く生み出されるグループに属しながらも、上前の関心は常に絵画へと深く注がれ、素材や形態を変えながら独自の作風を貫きました。

本展では、初期の具象絵画から、「縫」シリーズが示す圧倒的な手仕事と精神性、そして晩年に至る版画作品まで、半世紀以上にわたる上前の画業の軌跡をご紹介します。上前がひたすらに探求した絵画の世界をぜひご高覧ください。

Chiyu Uemae (1920–2018) was an artist who pursued a unique mode of expression through paintings layered with countless dots of oil paint and his “Nui” (Stitch) series, in which he meticulously covered fabric with dense stitches of needle and thread. Uemae was one of the few members who consistently participated in the activities of the Gutai Art Association in Kansai from its founding to its dissolution after World War II. Despite belonging to a group known for its dynamic works embodying physicality and spatiality, Uemae’s focus remained steadfastly on painting, maintaining his own distinctive style while experimenting with various materials and forms.

This exhibition traces over half a century of Uemae’s artistic career, from his early figurative works to the overwhelming craftsmanship and spiritual depth of the “Nui” series, and finally to the prints produced in his later years. We invite you to experience the world of painting that Uemae ceaselessly explored.
