“STAGNATE” is an independent exhibition by artists Azu Kimura, Koji Maekawa, and biologist Shuichiro Tomita. The project is an ongoing culmination of works during their participation in the Fundamentalz program, which has promoted exchanges between scientists and artists since 2021.
Artists Kimura and Maekawa have collaborated with Biologist Tomita on their individual investigations. Through these discussions, they have made different approaches and discoveries, gradually accumulating fragments that can be shared with others.
The exhibition, titled “STAGNATE,” encompasses the ideas and thoughts of the participants. It will showcase the detritus of research and thoughts accumulated throughout the meetings between artists and biologists.
Whilst these fragmentary moments flow past us unnoticed, In our exhibition, we hope for these works to ignite unexpected interactions and responses from visitors, generating a growing synergy of ideas, works and encounters.

Azu Kimura (Artist)
Born 1986 in Tokyo, Japan. Azu Kimura is a Visual Artist that focuses on drawings, sculptures, and installations.
After graduating from Musashino Art University, she worked as an employee at an Ikebana company.
During this time, she became interested in plants and living things and began working as an artist.
Her interests are diverse, incorporating plants, geological strata, and insects. As a result, her work is informed by experiences she cultivates during fieldwork.
Shuichiro Tomita (Biologist)
Born in 1965 in the city of Kitakyushu, the chimney city. I developed a taste for unselective sensory circuits during my five-year-long dorm life as a teenager. After giving my factory-worker father a hard time by declaring “I want to become a farmer”, I went on to study at the Faculty of Agriculture at university. There I chose to join the silkworm research lab attracted by the gentle atmosphere of the professors. Since then, I have been exploring silkworms as a primary research material.
Koji Maekawa (Artist)
Born 1980 in Osaka, Japan. I explore the possibilities of art and expression while determining the interests and circumstances of each situation. In recent years, I have continued my activities while straddling between individual practices, such as exchanges with scientists, the production and use of haptic works, and search for ways in which art can overlap with daily life. Main exhibitions and projects include, “Koji Maekawa Solo Exhibition: Drawings of Manifolds – Kavli IPMU Artist in Residence report exhibition” Osaka University, Osaka(2023), “UNIVERSAL MUSEUM :Exploring the New Field of Tactile Sensation” National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka (2021) etc.
