Description
Since old days, domestic animals we share our lives with as well as fantastic or mythological creatures cherished in our imagination have traditionally functioned as an object for adoration and prayer for us Japanese, which is why their representation is associated with a symbol of good fortune in Japanese iconography and art motifs.
In the history of Raku ceramics, there are also some examples in which these auspicious animals are figuratively represented or applied as decorative design or even to name a tea bowl.
This exhibition showcases a selection of works by Raku generations where auspicious animal motifs are vividly and often humorously represented, evoking wonder and charm.
We hope our visitors could enjoy these creatures real and imagined in the repertoire of Raku ceramics.
