Description
Which colour do you think represents Japan most? There would be various answers to this question but ‘red and black’ would be a common answer that comes up in mind of many as the traditional colours that Japan is associated with.‘Red and black’ are not only popular colours applied to decorate domestic vessels and utensils for daily use but are also among those propounded in the Buddhist and Shintoist symbolism and art.
Chōjirō invented black and red Raku tea bowls under the guidance of Sen Rikyū.
The question is why Chōjirō and Rikyū chose these two colours among all the others.
What kind of philosophical and visual inspiration were behind the choice of red and black in search for the aesthetic development of Raku tea bowls?
