Description

The book entitled The Standard Edition: Raku Successive Generations published last year covers a selection of 203 pieces representing the work of all the Raku generations from the founder Raku Chôjirô to the contemporary, Raku Kichizaemon XV, the current head, and Raku Atsundo, the future successor. All the descriptions on the illustrated works as well as the introductory essay on each generation were written by Raku Atsundo, while the general essay to explain historical, technical, philosophical backgrounds of Raku ware, particularly highlighting the essence of Chôjirô’s tea bowls as well as the wabi aesthetics lying at their core, was written by the current head. The book will serve as a comprehensive handbook of Raku ware and the successive generations.
This exhibition is the second of a series to show a selection of works contained in this book.
The exhibition showcases 450-year long history of Raku ware encapsulated in the work of all the Raku generations and how the tradition has met with innovation on their continuous creative journey.
