About

Surface and Depths
An exhibition that shows the works of three people who use cameras to reflect history, scenery, and the dialogues between people. They studied the photography and video course together at the Kyoto University of Art and Design, and are now currently working in their own places. Shirai, who is a student of the University, has moved from painting to video expression for less than a year, but has been accompanying her previous high school teacher for approximately 2 months. Based upon her own experience, she produced a documentary that focuses on the ideal methods for art education. Shimura, who is a student at the Graduate School of Image Studies at Tokyo University of the Arts, has an interest in history that is difficult to acknowledge with one’s visual perception. She has been conducting research on rivers in the suburbs of Yokohama which are currently used as subterranean drain, and she is producing works based on the historical facts that are being uncovered there. Okawara has been carrying out photography work in the city and its suburbs, with their main theme being on capturing the relationship between people and their environment, and he plans to announce a new series with his own “skin” as the motif.
