In 18th-century Kyoto, Maruyama Ōkyo carved out a new genre of realistic painting based on sketching from life. Maruyama’s minutely depicted works enjoyed tremendous popularity, leading to the formation of the Maruyama school. Meanwhile, Goshun, who had studied both with Yosa Buson and Maruyama after the former’s death, founded the Shijo school by infusing Maruyama’s realism with Buson’s elegant charm. Maruyama and Goshun in turn inspired the Maruyama-Shijo school, which produced a succession of artists including Shiokawa Bunrin, Mori Kansai, and Kōno Bairei followed by leading figures in the modern Kyoto art world such as Takeuchi Seihō, Yamamoto Shunkyo, and Uemura Shōen. In this exhibition, we trace this artistic lineage, which stretches from Maruyama and Goshun to the modern era, while presenting a full picture of the Maruyama-Shijo school and providing insight into various aspects of the Kyoto art world.
