About

It has been over 1,200 years since the capital of Japan was transferred to Kyoto. Over the centuries, textile artisans have developing a wide range of devices, techniques, and designs to keep pace with the times. Their outstanding works stem from an effort to carry on an unbroken line of methods and forms while constantly pursuing new approaches amid the changes that arose in every era.
In this exhibition, we focus on 28 artists and aspects of their work to shed light on various conditions related to dyeing and weaving from the 1960s, when the museum first opened, to the present day. Unfortunately, space constraints make it necessary to limit the number of artists and works, but we hope that this exhibition provides viewers with a general overview of Kyoto textiles from the period.
