About

The exhibition revolves around “Frozen Lotus”, an installation by Season Lao, shown together with four works by Sol LeWitt, an artist representative of 1960s American minimalism. Season Lao’s works capture scenes he encountered during a visit to the Tohoku region of Japan last year. A part of a lotus quietly awaiting its demise in a frozen pond. The frozen breath of the lotus depicted in these delicate and hushed works sways in the wind and sighs. The life of the sleeping lotus is expressed as the space found in ink paintings, a space that is born from the holes in the plant’s roots and the natural phenomena of white snow and clouds. The work is suggestive of an Asian minimalist perspective of nature.
First exhibited in Zuisen-ji Temple in Kyoto, it has then gone on to be shown in Macao, Taipei, Daegu and Vermont, USA.
