Description

Described by the late neuropsychologist Richard Gregory as “the borderland where the inner and the outer world meet”, perceptual illusions are ubiquitous in our sensory lives but often ignored as peculiar evolutionary hangovers. Yet recent developments in philosophy and neurology have proved the importance of studying these idiosyncrasies, and other sensory ambiguities, in earnest and indicated a world of possibility that exists in investigating further.
I aim to enable participants to conduct their own exploration of such sensory phenomena, in a direct/ subjective sense, and reveal possible new ways of thinking about the notion of perception. Using various multimedia systems, the work is designed to allow participants to experiment and consciously engage with their perceptual process, gaining a greater awareness of how we see and interact with our immediate environment.
I hope participants can experiment with tricking the very part of the brain where perception enters consciousness: a mechanism that is normally uncontrollable and elusive to our grasp (in both a physical sense and in terms of our limited understanding of its nature). It is this direct contact and exploration of our surroundings that is so essential to our experience.
